HOWLONG QUARRY

INFORMATION ABOUT
HOWLONG QUARRY

Howlong Sand Quarry has been operational for over 60 years and has a long history of supplying construction and decorative products to the local region.

Situated on the flood plains of the Murray River, the Howlong Sand Quarry extracts and processes alluvial material to produce a coarse sand and river pebble in 7mm, 10/14mm and 20mm sizes.

The river pebbles have been petrographically analysed to be a mixture of vein quartz and quartzite, with a minor amount of hornsfels and rhyolite.

Along with their decorative properties, these pebbles are considered to be water worn, very hard, very strong and very durable.

Over the years mining standards have improved from what they once were, and LS Quarry has committed to rehabilitating an old part of one of the pits as part of our sustainability and rehabilitation program. This legacy rehabilitation project will see up to 50m of fill material placed to reduce the inrush of water during periods of peak water flow.
